Renovations Done Right
Communication, Craftsmanship & Less Stress
A Better Renovation Experience
With Gareth Davis Builders
There’s no shortage of builders out there, but renovations require experience, communication, and a team that gets excited about the process and cares about the end result. Here’s what makes us stand out from the rest…
Renovation Specialists
Renovations are very different to new builds, requiring a different skillset, experience, and an ability to adapt and problem solve.
Unlike some builders who take on renovations as a side to new builds, renovation work is something our team genuinely enjoys. From improving layouts to modernising spaces, we believe our passion for renovations is reflected in both the experience we provide and the quality of the finished result.
Clear Communication From First Hellos to Handover
One of the biggest frustrations homeowners face during renovations is feeling left in the dark.
We believe good communication is just as important as good workmanship, which is why we keep you informed and involved throughout every stage of your project.
A Personal Approach
We take ownership of your project and are proud to deliver an exceptional result.
When you work with Gareth Davis Builders, you work directly with Lauren and Gareth, an experienced local builder who remains actively involved throughout your renovation.
Practical Solutions & Experienced Problem Solving
Renovations often uncover unexpected challenges, especially in older homes.
Our experience allows us to problem solve efficiently, communicate clearly, and keep projects progressing smoothly while minimising stress for you and your family.
Quality Workmanship & Detail Driven
We deliver renovations that not only look great but are built properly to stand the test of time. From trusted subcontractors to careful finishing details, quality is at the centre of everything we do.
Trusted By Local Homeowners
As a family-run North Canterbury building company, much of our work comes from referrals and repeat clients, which is very telling of the service we offer.
Homeowners choose us because they value honest advice, reliable communication, and a renovation experience that feels professional, organised, and well managed from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Renovations
Why hire a renovation specialist instead of a general builder?
Renovations require a very different skillset to new builds. Working with existing homes involves problem solving, careful planning, great communication, and attention to detail. At Gareth Davis Builders, renovations and extensions are a core part of what we do, and our team genuinely enjoys the process of transforming homes.
For more detailed information, read our article on the importance of choosing a specialist renovation builder.
Do you manage the full renovation process?
Yes. We manage the renovation process from planning through to completion. We coordinate subcontractors, scheduling, and all project management to help keep your project running smoothly.
Can you help with renovation design and planning?
Absolutely, we love to help with the planning and design phase. We have trusted designers and architects we work along side to provide you a full design and build service, or we can work with a designer of your choice.
How much does a home renovation cost in Christchurch or North Canterbury?
Renovation costs can vary significantly depending on the size of the project, the age of the home, the level of finish, and whether structural work is involved. Smaller renovations may involve updating a single space, while full home renovations and extensions require more detailed planning and investment.
For a more detailed breakdown of renovation costs, budgeting tips, and the factors that can affect pricing, read our article on what a home renovation can cost in Christchurch and North Canterbury.
How long does a home renovation take?
Every renovation is different and it depends on the size and complexity of the project. Smaller renovations like bathrooms can take as little as four weeks, while larger full-home renovations and extensions can take several months. We provide realistic timelines and keep clients informed throughout the project.
Can I live in my home during renovations?
In some cases, yes. This depends on the scale of the renovation and which areas of the home are being worked on. For major renovations, it is sometimes more practical and comfortable to temporarily move out during parts of the project.
What areas do you service?
We work across North Canterbury in the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. We focus Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Pegasus, Woodend, Amberley and surrounding areas, and we also service the northern suburbs of Christchurch.
Do you offer fixed-price contracts?
Yes, we typically work with fixed-price contracts to give you certainty and peace of mind around the overall cost of your project. However, with renovation work, there can be unforeseen elements that only become clear once the job is underway. In these cases, we’ll discuss any required variations with you, and it’s wise to have a contingency budget in place to cover unexpected work if needed.
How do I get started with a renovation?
The best place to start is by getting in touch with us for an initial conversation. We can discuss your ideas, budget, timeframe, and whether your project is likely to be a good fit before moving to the next stage.

The Renovation Process
01.
Initial Consultation
We meet with you to discuss your goals, budget, timeline, and what’s possible for your property. If the project appears feasible, we’ll guide you through the next steps.
02.
Design & Feasibility
We don’t believe in guesswork. For most renovation and extension projects, accurate pricing can only be provided once plans have been completed.
If you already have plans, we can move straight into pricing. If not, we can connect you with one of our trusted design partners (or work with a designer of your choice) to prepare concept and pricing plans, and then we can move into pricing your project.
For smaller projects that don’t require consent, we can often provide pricing without formal plans.
03.
Detailed Quotation
Once pricing plans are available, we prepare a detailed quotation. This includes obtaining supplier and subcontractor pricing to ensure the quote is accurate and comprehensive.
We offer two pricing options:
- A paid quotation service for an agreed fee, or
- A Commitment to Quote Agreement, where you agree for us to present our quotation alongside any others you obtain so comparisons can be made on a true like-for-like basis
04.
Consent & Final Review
Once you’re comfortable with the pricing, your designer can lodge the plans for building consent. If Council requires any changes during the consent process, we’ll review and update the pricing if required.
05.
Contract & Deposit
When consent is issued, we’ll prepare your Master Build Contract and provide a 10% deposit invoice. Once the contract is signed and the deposit is received, we can schedule your project and begin preparations.
06.
Construction & Handover
Our team completes the construction work, keeps you informed throughout the project, and hands over your completed renovation ready to enjoy.
